Lineage 1 Intro:

Lineage one participants are obviously connected to each other in some way, both geographically, as so far all lines originate from the Scottish Borders, and from the dna results.

Possibly with more participants, both new lineages represented, and confirming signatures for those already represented but with only one participant, the jigsaw may become more complete.

Contributions to this analysis are most welcome, particularly if you can figure out how to fit all these people into one lineage!

Markers signifying specific lines:

It is assumed that those markers differing from the mode and occurring only on one line, are indicative of that particular (sub) lineage.
This applies to:
447 = 21 and cdyb = 36 for F-8's line of Thomas & Elspeth (REDPATH)
464b = 12 for F-12's line of John A & Sarah (DAUGHTERTY)
641 = 10 for F-1's line of John,  son of Archibald and Janet (SCOTT)
576 = 18 and 449 = 29 for F-14's line of Archibald, son of Archibald and Janet (SCOTT)
413-a = 25 for F-6's line of George and Janet (MURRAY) presumed parents of James m. Helen (GOODFELLOW), with 534 = 19 being the sub-lineage of Tom (F-13)'s forbears
389-2 = 30 and/or CDYb=39 look like defining the line of John & Jessie (JOHNSTONE) as they are (F-17)'s only differences from the clump "2" modal (at 67 markers)
460=11 for Robert & Elizabeth (TAYLOR) (ignoring the 460 = 11 shown by William (F-12) as being a separate mutation).
As of Mar 2011, it is now possible that this 460=11 may date to an earlier family, as a third line has joined this group, that of John & Elizabeth (YULE) FAIRBAIRN.
572=10 for James & Christian (LEARMONTH)

and possibly CDYa=37 for the overall line of Robert and Agnes (LANDRETH) FAIRBAIRN.

The ELLIOTT/IRWIN matches all share CDYa=34, which is assumed to be a much earlier branch, although we do not, of course, know which branched first, the ELLIOTTs from the FAIRBAIRNs, or vice versa.

Defining groups:

Of the markers shared by more than one line, several show decided patterns.

570 is another marker showing strong division into two camps. A faster mutating marker, it shows a value of 19 for all of the John and Bessie (fflint) line, including the reported cousin of Joe's line, plus the line of James and Helen (CAMPBELL), both of whom are otherwise more aligned to "clump 2"; and a value of 18 for the remainder of "clump 2".

391 = 9 together with 520 = 21 appears to apply to those believed to be descendants of John and Bessie (fflint) F.

391 = 10  and 520 = 20 applies to the rest of Lineage 1, but includes Joe (F-10), whose ancestor Albert was reported to be a cousin of two of the lines showing 391 = 9 (after 100 years of geographical separation).

So, how would YOU create a lineage chart combining these families into one?

Assuming these are all descendants of John and Bessie (fflint) FAIRBAIRN, those markers that differ from the mode are taken to define their particular line from the shared patriarch.

Joe (F-10) is included both here, and in "clump 2" for comparative purposes because of the reported "cousin" relationship to the lines of Roy (F-3) and William (F-12), which family story survived 100 years of separation.

To me, this indicates, that the actual Genetic Distance calcuations and their percentages are probably overly cautious for these inter-related Borders families (see links below).

"Clump 2" is currently defined as having marker 391 = 10 and 520 = 20 (as opposed to "clump 1" the likely descendants of John and Bessie (fflint) FAIRBAIRN, who have 9 and 21 respectively on those markers).
With a growing number of participants, it is becoming obvious that "clump 2" is actually the more common, defining group for the Borders FAIRBAIRNs.
This group is also beginning to show patterns of sub groups which should eventually help combine known families into their respective genetic lines.
Only Doug (F-6) and Tom (F-13), and Joe (F-10) and Ron (F-19) are known to be related, and have proven paper trails connecting their respective lines.
It is therefore rather hard to know how to connect these related FAIRBAIRNs into a cohesive whole however often many researchers have attempted to do so over the years, with varying results, some of which being shown on the Summary Patriarch pages Other Pedigrees.
What is becoming clear is that there is a growing sub group of clump 2 who share 413a = 25, rather than the modal 413a = 22.

In addition, see the theoretical dna signature chart for "clump 2"
